5 clever bathroom lighting ideas

When those long, light days of summer finally fade into autumn and winter, it's time for the spotlight to fall on the lighting in your home.
Bathroom lighting can often be very conventional with one solitary bulb creating a bright but somewhat harsh illumination that lacks warmth and imagination. However...the one thing that lighting in your bathroom doesn't have to be is boring.
It's amazing just how much difference the right type of light can make. So here are 5 unique options for you to try.
1. Chandelier
As the bathroom is more commonly used as a luxury room of relaxation, a bathroom chandelier would be a great choice. It doesn't have to be a huge draping chandelier; they come in all different shapes and sizes. It adds great ambient lighting and looks really impressive. We've added a chandelier style light to our Winchester suite set to demonstrate the overall effect.
Add a touch of class (or should that be "glass"?) to your bathroom with a chandelier
2. Recessed lighting
Recessed lighting is a really modern look. It takes up very little space and adds a great atmosphere to the room. It blends in and can be used in ceilings to add focus to various parts of the room. For example, they can be used to highlight a vanity mirror.
When placed close enough together, recessed lighting units will play off each other and you'll be left with a much brighter space.
Recessed bathroom lighting gives an unobtrusive and highly contemporary look and feel
3. Bath lights
This is something that many people don't even consider. Having spotlights fitted on the inside of the bath will create a unique, relaxing ambience. With the rest of the lights off, you can lay back and completely relax in the soft dim lighting. It's safer than using candles to add a little light, yet just as relaxing.
4. Illuminated mirrors
You'll typically find illuminated mirrors in hotel bathrooms, providing quite a dim, atmospheric light. However, mirrors featuring lights are becoming more and more common in our homes as a means of adding a further light source. These days you'll find a wide range of contemporary illuminated mirrors available from LED designs to more traditional styles. If you want to avoid having to wire these up to the mains, you can also choose battery-operated models.
The Lumina mirror features variable backlighting, so you can switch between warm and cool white light to suit your mood
5. LED floor lights
One of the most unique ways to use lighting in the bathroom is to install them into the floor. Coloured LED lights will add a really unique look and feel to the room. It's an ultra-modern style that's also quite romantic. For inspiration, take a look at the Tate suite (below), where LED lights have been sunk into steps, making a real impact.

Other considerations
These are just 5 ways to use lighting to your advantage in the bathroom. You can also consider using a dimmer style light if you'd prefer. That way you can lower the lighting when you want to relax in the bath and increase it whenever you need to—but make sure the switch is outside your bathroom.
Why not combine 2 or more of the suggestions above? Bath lights, floor lights and a chandelier will create a really unique style. Think about the type of bulbs you want to use too. Halogen bulbs tend to be the best option but they can also be slightly more expensive so it's worth weighing up the pros and cons. Incandescent bulbs may be cheaper but typically have a shorter shelf life so make sure you consider value for money rather than raw price when making your decision.
